Article: What Should You Have at Home Before ACDF Surgery?

What Should You Have at Home Before ACDF Surgery?

Shared by real patients preparing for or recovering from neck surgery.

The best time to discover that everything you use is on a low shelf is not the day you come home from neck surgery.

Patients preparing for ACDF often focus on the operation itself. People who have already been through it tend to talk about much smaller things: where the charger is, how they will get shoes on, what they can swallow and where they will sleep.

Set up the recovery zone first

Patients commonly recommend putting frequently used items between waist and shoulder height so less bending and reaching is required. Keep water, medications, chargers, tissues and other daily essentials easy to reach.

Several patients also prepared a bed, recliner or adjustable sleeping area before surgery rather than trying to solve the sleep problem while exhausted after coming home.

Food and swallowing

Some ACDF patients experience temporary swallowing difficulty after an anterior approach. Patients often keep softer foods available because they are easier for them to tolerate.

Do not change, crush or split medications simply because swallowing becomes difficult. Ask your surgeon or pharmacist how each medication should be taken. Some medications cannot be safely crushed.

Small practical things patients remembered

Slip-on shoes or elastic laces came up because bending to tie shoes can be difficult. Long charging cables, easy clothing and help with pets, children, laundry or meals can also remove unnecessary work during the early days.

Your surgeon's instructions should determine what you actually need. A collar, wound supplies or other medical equipment may or may not be part of your recovery plan.

Patient Story note: Use your hospital or surgeon's discharge instructions as the primary checklist. Patient suggestions are practical experiences, not medical requirements.

Preparing the home setup also goes hand in hand with hair prep before neck surgery, recovering from neck surgery alone, and the night before surgery.
