Article: How to Prep Your Hair Before Neck Surgery

How to Prep Your Hair Before Neck Surgery

Shared by real patients preparing for neck surgery.

One question comes up constantly in neck surgery recovery groups: what do you do with your hair when you know you can't shower for days afterward?

One woman asked exactly that. She knew the drill, no shower for five days post-op, doctor's orders, just body wipes to get by. She wears a soft collar. Her usual style is just wearing it down. She wasn't sure if that was about to become a problem.

Two real answers came back, both centered on the same idea: get it up and out of the way before you go in.

One patient said a simple scrunchie was the only thing that actually worked. Anything else kept getting bunched up and caught under the collar.

Another patient's solution came from her sister, who braided her hair into pigtails the night before surgery. That held up through the whole no-shower stretch. She was able to remove her collar just for quick showers and meals, but kept everything else in place, and the braids meant she didn't have to fight tangled, loose hair against the edge of the collar the whole time.

Neither of these is complicated. Neither requires buying anything special. But if you're staring down days without a shower and a collar you can't move much in, having your hair already secured, out of your face and away from the collar's edge, is one less thing to manage during a recovery that already has enough to think about.

If you're planning ahead, compare these tips with what real patients want you to know the night before surgery, what to have at home before ACDF surgery, and what recovering from neck surgery alone can look like.

This reflects real experiences shared by patients recovering from or preparing for neck surgery. It is not medical advice. Always follow the guidance of your surgical team in the days before and after your procedure.
