Nobody Warned You About the Dentist
Shared by real patients preparing for or recovering from neck surgery.
One month after neck surgery, a patient remembered she had a routine dental cleaning scheduled. Suddenly a normal appointment did not feel normal at all.
Patients in her recovery group had faced the same question, and their timelines varied dramatically. Some waited months. Some said their dentist wanted written clearance. One patient still used extra neck support at dental visits long after surgery because the chair position was uncomfortable.
The dental chair is part of the problem
A cleaning often requires reclining with the head supported and the neck positioned so the hygienist can work. Early after cervical surgery, that position may be uncomfortable or inconsistent with a patient's restrictions.
That is a practical reason to ask before simply keeping the appointment. Tell both the surgeon and dental office what surgery you had, when you had it and whether you have movement restrictions.
What about infection and antibiotics?
Patients sometimes worry that dental work will infect spinal hardware or assume they automatically need preventive antibiotics. Do not use another patient's instructions as your own. Recommendations can depend on the procedure, medical history, dental treatment and the preferences of the treating clinicians.
Ask your surgeon and dentist whether you need to postpone elective work, whether any special positioning is necessary and whether preventive antibiotics are indicated for you. Do not start antibiotics simply because someone in an online group was prescribed them.
If urgent dental care is needed, contact the dentist and surgical team rather than delaying treatment on your own.
Patient Story note: There is no single patient-community timeline for returning to dental care after cervical fusion. Use your surgeon and dentist to make the decision for your situation.
